Afrigator, Kenya Unlimited and an Abandoned Blog or Two

I hope my modest tumblelog will be around 2 years from now, and I hope tumblr will still be there to host it. If Afrigator’s figures are anything to go by there should be over 20,000 African bloggers on the scene by mid 2011. The growth in the last 9 months has been amazing. With over 5,300 blogs indexed, that’s a whopping 135 % increase since its 1st anniversary in April, 2008.
However, as with any sector of the blogosphere, bloggers come and go. The Internet is littered with abandoned blogs, and Africa-themed journals and wikis are not immune to this phenomenan either. As I continue to de-clutter my bookmarks, I’m coming across more and more of them.
Gene Smith (n’cho blog) used to have insightful posts on African issues. He was the guy who created the very useful and informative “African Connectivity Map”, currently the destination of 100 dead links. At least Hash had the foresight to take a screenshot of it.
Where is Gene now? Attempting to apologise for his absence. It was Mr Smith who brought OSAFA to my attention in 2006. Well, guess what? That’s been abandoned too. Despite an endorsement from Cameron Sinclair.
At least its founder Helge Fahrnberger is still an advocate for positive change through his blog and Laafi charity.
Diderot’s Lounge’s last post from August 29, 2007 proudly proclaims:

The African Uptimist was another blog I enjoyed. No post since July, 2008.
Look at how many nominees and category winners from the Kenyan 2006 Blogs of the Year have stopped posting or completely disappeared.
Wait a minute, drumroll….we have a resurrection! Kenya Unlimited must have sensed I was preparing this post. After an 18-month absence the site is active again with a slick new design. Good news indeed. Blog on!!
