The graph above shows millions of Internet users per country. To put the numbers in perspective, although Nigeria has the highest number of internet users per country in all of Africa, the figure represents less than 7 % of its 148 million population. Roughly the same percentage applies to Kenya (38 million) and Sudan (39 million). South Africa is not that far ahead at 10 %.

Mauritius (26.7%) and Seychelles (38.9%) have the highest internet penetration levels. Considering their small surface areas and low populations this is understandable.

Burundi, Sierra Leone and Malawi all have penetration numbers under 1 %. Unfortunately, so do larger, more populous countries such as Ethiopia and Dr Congo.

Even though average internet reach for the African continent as a whole is 4.5 % compared to 24.7 % for the rest of the world, growth over the last decade has been phenomenal. 1,000 % from 2000 - 2007, according to Russell Southwood of Global Information Society Watch 2008. Graph above first seen by me at the excellent Mootboox. Country by country breakdown available here.
